High-pitched cycling noise 3-4 mins after start-up from rear - 99 A4 quattro
Hi. I am hoping someone here can help me. About 2-3 months ago, I noticed a high-pitched noise coming from the rear of the car about 3-4 minutes after start-up. The noise lasts about 1-2 minutes. While it does not start until after the car has been in motion, it will sometimes continue even when the car is at rest, i.e., at a stop sign or stop-light. This suggests to me that it is not related to the drive train because the noise does not require that the car be in motion. The noise is not constant in pitch but rather "cycles" - leading me to think that it is a pump or some other moving part. Braking hard often stops the noise - if one brakes lightly, the noise often continues, suggesting that it may be related to the brakes. The noise is unrelated to engine speed.
As I mentioned above, the noise continues for about 1-2 minutes and then stops for good, unless one starts the car up again after it has been sitting for at least a couple of hours.
The dealership has checked a variety of items related to the drive train without finding the source of the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

what engine?
The ones with the secondary air injection pump will make this noise but its from the front of the car. My 2.8 did this.
Quattros make a gurgling sound from the saddled fuel tank and tank pump.
If you have access to a Vag Com, you can monitor the measuring blocks and see if the relay coincides with the noise. I forget what block...Uwe's site will have it. My guess is 078 but it could be 088...that damn concussion knocked some wires loose
