got it for 800 bucks. needs: hood, FR fender, bumper, radiator, ac condenser, intercooler and radiator support. has 120k miles. the previous owner took really good care of it.
the engine bay looks nasty because it was weathered since the hood wouldnt close. been sitting since before may.

whats typical you'd get for it rebuilt?
5k?
minus 1K that it cost you. (round the minuses up)
4K profit.
minus 2K for all the parts you list, minus an additional 1K for paint.
down to 1K...add at least 500 for **** you didnt think of...etc.
basically with alot of effort on your part you might break even.
like most cars, its worth way more in pieces than together.

Umm....new competetion/hillclimb/rally car?
I'd totally gut it and sell all of its comfort parts, rebuild it as cheaply as possible with whatever parts you can get your hands on, then go beat on it at events.
Of course, I may be saying this due to the fact that I want to run a hillclimb this year, and can't because I'd need to install a rollbar in the GTI....and I don't know if I'm quite ready to do that yet.

Why not stick a VR6 in there?
That is something I have always wanted to do, but originally envisioned doing it into a B3/4. I think a VR6 B5 would be killer, especially with a nice big turbo bolted to it.
