So, I was changing the oil in my car, right. Basic ****. Jackin' it up on the driver side and heard this kind of pop sound. Thought it was the jack, so i checked the jack and everything seemed cool. After a few brief moments of thinking that jack might fail and fall on me I finished changing the oil and was just lookin' around under the car for the hell of it. That's when I came across this (see pic below). It's on the passenger side of the transmission. Apparently the boot had broken, now I don't know if that was the pop sound that I heard or if it was just coincidence that I happened to notice it and it's been like that for a while.
My question other than "how bad is it" is, what kind of $$$ am I looking at to fix it and how crucial is it that it gets fixed right away? Mind you, I haven't driven it since I noticed it.
p.s. i linked it just in case pic doesn't work.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v308/lowtrux4life/dammit.jpg</a

you used a jack and not stands? Never do that again. Somebody in the VW community...
died last year from their car falling on them. It DOES happen. How many miles on the car? You might be able to get away with just replacing the boot.

It's got about 157,000, the grease that exploded out is fairly fresh looking, I'm pretty sure all that's needed is a new boot, but I'm wondering how many labor hours that would take.
p.s. note taken, will invest in some stands.

it doesn't look as if the grease is dirty, so it may have happened recently. replace the boot
and re-pack with grease.
I wouldn't let it wait. or, you'll be buying a new axle, which won't cost any more in labor (if you're not a DIYer). I'd look at the price difference of the boot kit v a rebuilt axle. might be worth it just to replace the entire thing. not a bad job. you'll need the 17mm allen bit for the axle bolt and the 12-pts for the inner bolts.
fwiw, I hate that damn heat shield.
and, USE A JACK STAND!
