yeah, like i said, i think it's reasonable, too.
i don't need to run around looking for the best deal in town. just want a reasonable quote and know i'm not getting ripped off.

about 18k so far mine was also on a 96 12v.. but you can still mess that up too.
the correct tools is a must i designed my own camshaft holder tool for about $6 instead of the one for $129..

15 mins for the thermostat and maybe 15 mins for the waterpump. You have to expose the waterpump anyway when you do the TB so it's just a few minutes to unbolt the old one, clean the mating surfaces and install/torque the new one.
Also, you can do the thermostat yourself if you have access to a lift. It's reachable from under the car.
Cheers,

4 hours?
I don't see how that's possible. I've done this job a bunch of times, but I don't think I could get it done in 4 hours, even with all the correct tools, airtools, a lift, and a 2nd pair of hands whenever I need 'em. The only extra labour should be for the pump and thermostat, but maybe only an additional half hour. All the other additions you mention are parts that are removed anyway. So it's just a matter of installing new ones instead of the old ones upon reassembly.

Re: ok. that makes sense. just got an email quote from my mechanic
2 scenarios:
He's just realized how grossly he underbid the time on the TB and is trying to make it up on the waterpump.
OR
He's just taking the times from some bogus flatrate manual and the manual is assuming he's going to have to remove the radiator/condenser/lock carrier again to get to the water pump.

I haven't found any of the front seals leaking on a 1.8T yet, though I haven't done any TB's on anything with more than 80-90k miles yet either. The seals are cheap (like $5), but are a bit of a pain to install.

Re: ok, got a response from my mechanic.
Heh. That's a reasonable estimate in terms of time. It looks like this was a case of "oops, I totally underpriced the job...how can I fix it?" 8-)

Well, the water pump went out on my 4.2. Might as well do the timing belt. Anything else to replace?
