Hi All,

I'm a long-term owner of a C4 and am thinking of joining the B5 world. My parents are looking to sell their car, and I'd like to pay a fair price for it. What do you think is fair? The specs;

1997 A4 2.8 Quattro Automatic
114K
Pearl paint
Great shape
Timing belt at 80K
Leather, moonroof, Bose sound, winter package
Near Boston

What would I pay for a car like this from an unrelated private party?

The KBB value is over $7K private party
The Edmunds is under $5K.

Which is more realistic?

I think it's a 2001 -- last year before the redesign. And he just did some work on it -- replaced the shocks and springs.

He's getting into diesel cars now and converting them to biodiesel as a political statement, so he wants to get rid of the gas car. But knowing my friend, I'd be willing to bet that the Passat is in excellent condition. And since he mostly drives his biodiesel cars, the Passat has relatively low miles on it.

take a look on autotrader and see what they are selling for. You can get a 99.5 / 00 for 7 K with those miles.

5K is much more along the lines.
