A sad sad tale...with a happy ending!
I was driving (slowly, I might add) eastward Ann Arbour road in the curb lane between Haggerty and the 275 overpass when, out of nowhere, a black
void appeared. The front end of my car plummeted into this bottomless pothole from hell and landed with a teeth-clattering thud. Then the cursing began.
From the shimmying of the car as I coasted away from the crater it was immediately obvious that something was wrong but I was hoping against all
hope that it was just a flat. No such luck. I slowly pulled into the Shell station at Ann Arbour and 275 to asses the damage - yup my right
front wheel had a generous dent in it. I also bottomed out at the rearward edge of the front underbody shield (the thing you have to remove for oil changes); I must've hit that pretty hard too because there is a chunk missing and it seems like pretty tough plastic.
The happy ending is that insurance paid for a replacement wheel. They covered it under "unavoidable road hazzard"; I didn't have to pay a deductible, my rates are unaffected, etc.
