a couple things...
Make sure the bracket is sitting right on the mount. When I did it the 1st time, the spacers messed me up and the nice "spring to center" feel was all off. When in neutral it wanted to spring back to center when I pushed it left, but stayed to the right when pushed that way. The main problem though, is the piece of crap that meets the tranny. This description isn't going to help, but its basically two rubber tubes put in the shape of a +. It sucks.. there is so much play in it its ridiculous. I suggest you find the upgraded linkage and do HJB shift linkage mod for sure.

here is an old post.. HJB did this first and posted a link to his orginal write up about 5 down

You need to examine the "ball/joint" part. The gear selector and U-clip are the only other thing ..
that I can think of. Assuming all your bolts are tight and everything is installed correctly.

BTW.. I verified this parts (the rubber linkage piece) sucky-ness while changing my clutch..
I'm almost positive it has nothing to do with anything above the shift tunnel (i.e., what you already replaced with a short throw shifter). I had my Brother put the car in gear and move left to right while in gear. All the motion came from the rubber inside the linkage. I also fiddled with it when I had the tranny off. You can turn it 10 to 15 degrees just by hand. I can't wait to go to the junkyard and get a updated linkage
