Default I think I found a buyer for my A4...

My boss told me today that my GTI 337 is at the port RIGHT NOW which means it should be here in about 2 weeks or so.

I've been going back & forth about my A4 - do I keep it and have 3 car payments & higher insurance? Do I sell it and potentially give away thousands of dollars worth of performance mods?

It was really troubling me. I love my car. I mean I REEEEEEEALY love it. I have put thousands upon thousands of dollars and countless hours into getting it where it is now. But I think I found the PERFECT buyer (brace yourself)...

MY MOM.

Yep, you heard it right. My loving mother.

Before your jaw hits the floor, let me explain to you that my Mom is as much of a car lover as anyone. She still smiles when she thinks about her old BMW 2002 and all the fun she had driving it. She's the kind of person who could probably teach a chimpanzee to drive a stick shift in 20 minutes. And best of all...she LOVES my car. Always has since the first time she saw it.

Her only request...she doesn't want "those wheels with the tires that cost all kinds of money to replace." Just like a mom. So I'm either going to keep my HREs and buy adapters so they'll fit my GTI, or maybe sell them. We'll see how it goes.

Still, this seems like the perfect situation for me. I'm happy because my A4 stays in the family and is only 10 minutes away at my parents house in case I "get the urge." My wife is happy because her car gets to stay in the garage. My little sister is happy because she gets my Mom's car to drive when she starts college next month. My Mom is happy because she gets my A4, which she loves. And my Dad is happy because my Mom is happy. Pretty much a sweet deal all the way around.

As it stands right now, my Dad is the only one left to "convince." He's a Honda man and likes cars that offer mediocre performance, little/no maintenance, no worries and a nice QUIET exhaust tone. Replacing my Mom's Accord with a loud, brash, quirky A4 that burns oil and drinks premium gas the way a fat old dog drinks water probably isn't what he had in mind.

But when Mama ain't happy...ain't nobody happy.

Default Have you been in and driven the GTI?

its quick and has nice rims and all but fit, finish, and overal build quality is not up to spec with the Audi.

If your going to sell your A4 to your mom its gonna kill you everytime you see her with it. Unless of course you still get to drive it.

Default Seen a 337? Yes. Driven one? No. But there's one piece of info you may be missing...

I work at a VW dealership and I get a monthly car allowance that will more than cover my payment on the 337.

My monthly payment on the A4 is only $170, and I hardly owe anything on it. Selling it will leave me with a big pile of cash that I plan on using to pay off my wife's car & some other debt. Bottom line...by selling a car that costs me $170/month I can eliminate debt that costs me almost $400/month. And since my employer essentially covers my car payment, I don't have to spend $170/month. I'll essentially be almost $600 AHEAD every month.

Oh...and rest assured. I WILL drive my A4. A lot. And my Mom will only have a 5 mile ROUND TRIP commute to work every day, and only during the school year (she's a teacher). My A4 should stay in immaculate shape for a LOOOONG time. My Mom is totally cool with swapping cars for a couple of days.

Last thing - I've driven GTIs before with the 1.8t. Sure, they're no A4's...but don't tell me that if you had a chance to pick up a limited production GTI with a 6-speed, lowered suspension, Recaros, a 1.8t & 18" BBS wheels FOR FREE that you'd turn it down.

Default i actually have to disagree....

i havn't been in a 337, but all the other GTI's i've driven i loved, and for awhile i thought about selling my a4 for a gti vr6.

of course you get the added benefits of cheaper insurance, maintence(?), ease of parking, etc.

Default then do it. its obvious you want to you are now looking for people to confirm your ideas so you can

justify making the move. All i'm saying is really think about it before you make a move.

Default I don't recall asking anyone for confirmation, approval or justification. Nor am I pompous...

enough to think that a loaded VW GTI is somehow inferior for my needs or my status. I have an 8-mile round trip commute to work every day and if things go as planned, the car probably won't even hit 7500 miles in a year's time. Heck, it may not even hit 5000.

You seem to be hung up on the A4's "luxury." Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car...but do you have any idea what my particular A4 is like? I'm running big valve heads, a ported intake manifold, a ported throttle body, equal-length headers and a 3" exhaust with a high-flow catalytic converter. And that's just the short list. Luxury for me is definitely not on my list of priorities. I like fun cars and can do without the leatherette and woodgrain dashboards if it means I'm getting a car that puts a smile on my face as I'm zipping through a turn.

Lastly, as someone who plans to sell TONS of VWs I want to be able to tell my customers about them first-hand. When they ask me which one I drive, I lose more than just a little punch when I tell them that I'm driving some tuned up Audi. But if they're a VW enthusiast (which I AM - the 337 will be my 4th VW to date) and I tell them that I drive a 337, it opens the door to a whole level of rapport and low-pressure conversation that I hold in high regard when I deal with people.

But thanks for your approval. *rolls eyes*
