Default Well yeah, but thats clutch. It is getting it in gear I am talking about. While closely related

I dont think clutch engagement is part of the issue. The change occurs when transmission is shifted/moved from clutch engaging. While I believe imawesome and solaris, it seems like tranny must move some which allows car to shift into 1st gear easier.

the movement it needs is internal to the trans. Something inside isn't lining up right

Default Oh, that makes sense. So something inside tranny moves and lines up when clutch let out. Hadn't

thought about that aspect. Thank you again for clarifying!

Default Gonna go with stock 1.8t drivers side and 034 street density pass side. reasonable combo?

I want it to be stiffer, but not be irritating as it is my DD. Already have drivers side stock mount, so figure only having to shell out 50 for pass side density is best route.

Default Have you replaced the clutch yet? My car had/has that problem randomly too.

It started a while back and the first person I talked with said it was the first signs of my clutch going. Well, here we are about 6 month later at 138K miles and my clutch is now slipping. I just purchased all the parts and am going to replace the clutch, flywheel and ALL my mounts over the Thanksgiving break.

Default Yeah, the clutch was replaced with new Southbend OFE 3 and resurfaced flywheel 6 months ago, hasnt

been beat on too much, so 99% sure clutch is fine. I do feel a lot of shifting and there is a lot of lurching from the engine/tranny moving. I think tranny mounts are the most beat up, engine mounts dont seem to be leaking (knocks on wood) but I will probably try to get around to replacing them in the next few months.

Default I would suspect that the shifter is out of alignment, check that and also check

the shifter fork bushings at the tranny.

Now if those check out, I'm not really sure that new mounts would solve that problem, I'd say first gear is on it's way out.

I just replaced the 2.8 tranny in my 1.8t A4 due to first gear being very hard to engage as well as making a lot of mechanical knocing sounds, you can hear each tooth hitting in first, now 2nd is smooth as glass.

With the tranny swap I also did all the mounts:
RS4 Pass mount
Stern Drivers mount
RS4 motor mounts
New snub mount

I have yet to drive the car, but damn it is rock solid compared to before. I could move the motor by hand with the old mounts

Default Prob out of alignment. As long as I make sure its in gear all time (can usually tel when not all the

way in) I shouldnt have any problems or damage tranny. Was hoping to solve the problem with mounts, but I guess will try to make sure everything is aligned properly.

Thanks for the pointers
