Default I think my car is falling apart.

First it started with a slight knocking noise when turning the wheel slightly right. Then the knocking was followed by a squeal. Control arms, tie rods, axles, everything looks fine and has been replaced fairly recently. This morning I was coming up to a stoplight and heard a loud pop as I was braking. Then I noticed the brakes weren't biting as usual and seemed to be slipping. I checked the brakes out and everything looks fine. Any thoughts?

Default Inner brake pad? On my old car they actually broke into three pieces.

I didn't know until I took it apart as it all looked fine from a quick study with it together.

You can also check the guide pins that the caliper slides on. They can wear/bind and worse case break.

Default Thanks, I'll check them out. I haven't taken the wheels off yet to get a closer look.

The outer pads look fine, but you could be right.

Default 2nd. Mine actually popped out of the caliper when it broke apart and got wedged between the

caliper and the rotor causing pretty immediate metal to metal contact and the friction heat blew my caliper and the metal pad backing destroyed the rotor.

Default I just went out on my lunch break to examine it further and a pad has broken apart...

It is the front passenger outside pad. The part of the pad that wears detached from the top of the pad. What could have caused this?

Default * Wow I was right! Yay! * ;-) --> Age most likely caused it. Just replace them and

be sure to bed them in correctly.

If the rotors are even a little scored or look worn replace them or at minimum have them surfaced.

They are cheap enough that good quality replacements are really the way to go unless they are quite new.

Default Yeah, I might just go ahead and do the A8 upgrade while I'm at it.

Thanks for the tip, I hope that's all that it is.
