I think my rear diff seals are going...
I was under my car cleaning my calipers yesterday for painting and I saw that there was some sort of oil or something slpattered all around the area of the rear diff on the right side. At first I though gas leak, but I smelled it and it smelled more like grease. I know I've had a small seeping out of oil from my rear diff, which I've just been topping up once every 6-8 months, but it looks like it must be getting worse now. Has anyone replaced the rear diff seals before? How difficult is the jorb? Would I be better off having my local mech do it?
thanks- I know its the weekend so I may not get many responses (no one "working") ;-)

I too have a rear leaking differential.
I too noticed it when I had my Brullen exhaust put on a few months ago.
I talked to the mechanical who does my tune-ups about it (who has been working on Audis for about 20 years) and he said that he could replace the seal but in all likelyhood it could start leaking again in a year. He said it is a very common problem with A4. As long as it is just seeping (about 1 teaspoon every thousand miles or so according to him) it is not something to worry about. Just check it every tune up and top it off. Obviously if it is leaking rather than seeping it is a larger issue.
With mine there are no drops on the driveway, just the housing has fluid on it.
Hope this helps.

that is what mine used to be... now it is splattered on other stuff
I think its the gas tank that stuff is splattered on... (as I said before, it is not leaking gas...)

Sounds like leaking rather than seeping, might need to replace.
I called 2 Audi mechanics, one quoted me $150 the other $260. You should be able to get it done for $150. They said it is about a 3 hour job.
Why can't the Germans design decent seals? I have the seeping cam tension seal too. The one mechanic said Audis and Volkswagons are notorious for leaking seals.
