If a panel is not primed and it has to be repainted, would the clearcoat come out messed up?

Default depends on the panel...

If the panel has been bondo'ed and not sanded and primed then it's possible for scratches to show up
(my driver side fender). If the panel was virtually smooth and roughed up very minutly and the base coat was put on evenly (a few coats) then the clear coat was put on. There is no reason to need primer. Primer is used to fill small scratches and also after bondo work. It also gives the paint a good surface to stick to. However "most" paint will stick fine to bare metal as long as it is "roughed" up. Not sure if this helps.. but meh

Default no i think the paint would could out ****ed up, maybe off match but the clearcoating

has nothing to do with paint. think of a wood floor when you vinyl it or clear coat it or wha you strange folk do, it doesn't really change the look of the wood, unless you`re staining, you see? so probably not. the clearcoat i think just protects the paint from rust and dirt/dust. probably should prime it just for hecksssake.

Default If you've ever used audi paint...

Clear coat is what actually gives your paint it's gloss color and pearl effect (depending on color). If you were to just use the base coat and not put a clear coat on, it would not match at all. I'm not trying to knock you down or anything, just i've dabbled in the painting area a bit. Clear coat is a neccessity for color, not just for rust and dirt.
