I'll try asking again, why is a leaking BPV bad?

What is happening to the compressed air that it will make you lose power? If the BPV "bypasses" the throttle plate only, a leaky BPV will still be directing the compressed air into the intake manifold, so where is the lose of power? I tried asking this before, but the answers I got did not make any sense. I do have a clue about turbo engines, so hopefully it wasn't just me not understanding.

Default If it leaks it is leaking from the boost side to the uncompressed side. Therefore, boost does not

make it to the intake manifold.

Default If that is true, then why does it run rich with a BOV?

I keep on hearing that with a BOV the car will run rich cause the blow off goes to atmosphere and not the intake manifold. The computer will overcompensate with fuel, therefore run rich. If what you say is true, then the car should run rich even with a BPV, right?

Default

Can it harm anything? Shorten the life of the turbo? What if you're chipped?

Default This is a bit more complicated than it appears on the surface (more)

If the BPV leaks to the atmosphere it will indeed run rich as the metered and expected air has not been delivered to the intake tract but the fuel for the expected air volume will be.
If the leak is from a weak BPV that opens premuturely the metered air is not dumped to atmosphere but is dumped, unpressurized, after the MAF, into the hose that leads to the turbine housing. In other words the metered air is still in the loop.
