Default I'm planning to buy an A4 ('97-'00) Model Need Info

I'm planning to purchase an A4, just not familiar with how well Audi A4s hold up. I'm looking at certified ones from Audi.

Are these cars reliable? Anyone have any major issues with them?

Default I bought my '97 1.8TQ Tip in Sept. of 2001.......

It had relativly high mileage at 64,000 but I took it to a mechanic whom I trust who said the car was in good mechanical condition, engine and drivetrain, and that it would be a good buy. I was expecting to have some high repair bills within the first year but having recently graduated and becoming employed I wanted something "nice" until I could afford something new....I drove the car just fine changing oil every 3,000 miles and put another 6,000 miles on the car when a vein of the turbo "broke" off and was sucked into the intake bouncing around the head causing much damage. No compression in #'s 1 and 4.....The local VW: New engine, new turbo = $6,500. No thanks was my reply. I then took it on myself to contact Audi North America and commenced the harassment. To make a long story short....The end result was that Audi took care of me and replaced the engine + turbo + anything else even remotely associated with the engine falure at a low cost deductible of $1,000.....Keep in mind that this took until May of 2002. Just remember that the cars is one of the greatest made but when something does go wrong is costs.

Default Everyone on this board will tell you...

.. the car is absolutely great. There are alot of members on this A4 board (Id guess about 5,000) that all love thier car just as much as I do mine. Its a great car, inside, out.

Really, the only major issues are the control arms (which tend to need to be re-greased), the grease the factory uses tends to dissipate in time. It doesnt concern every car but only a percentage. One other thing is to make sure the timing belt is changed every 60k instead of 90k.

Besides that, its just factory scheduled maitnence, tune-ups and the use of premium gasoline to keep the car reliable.

Default Make sure you buy from a Audi Dealer to take advantage of the

"audi assured" warranty..I spent $200 in deductibles ($50 per visit), and saved over 2 grand in repair cost!!!

Other than that...car has never left me stranded, and I'm now trying to convince a female friend of mine to either lease an all-road for her business, or buy a used all-road off-lease!!

Default Great cars but get an extended warantee!!!!!

I purchased a '98 2.8QM in May of '01 with 39k on it. When my car hit 52k this winter my car was leaking coolant all over the place and I needed a new water pump and timing belt. If I didnt have the extended warantee (Audi Assured ends at 50k) I would have had to foot a near $1000 bill for the repairs.
