Default Interesting Canadian Editorial (long)...................

A friend emailed this to me. Good perspective on this whole mess.

---------------

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by
Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text
of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for
the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the
interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the France was in danger of collapsing in
1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the
United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped
billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other
country in the world have a plane to equal the
Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the international lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider
putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put
theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued
and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania
Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced
to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to
the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was
outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one
Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Default Americans are also the ones who trained thouse terrarist organizations in the first place!

That was also "money well spent".

Yeah, there a lot of things that America did, that world should be gratefull for, but then there are also a lot of things that America should be ashamed of.

Call it whatever you want, but the very guy who is the prime subject of this whole mess was trained by CIA.

Default We did not train "terrorists" we trained Afghan rebels...

The fact that they turned into terrorists was out of our hands.

Default We've also given money to Saddam Hussein (we liked him better during the Iran-Iraq war),

as well as trained Manuel Noriega.

We might not have control over what they do after we give them money and train them, but we could probably do a better job of screening them out, first.

Default Its always easy to "wash your hands" and say that "you" had no control over what has become.

Truth of the matter is that CIA should have used better judgement in whom they where training. If you raise a dog to fight, thats what it will do for the rest of its life.

Do not forget, those rebels where not trained in the similar fascion as US soldgers. They were trained to KILL with no regard for laws and no respect for humanity. They murdered people in devastating fasion. These rebels are religious fanatics who think that if you do not believe in their believs, you have to be killed. CIA did not train an army of soldgers to protect their contry, they trained an army of rebels and terrorists, most of whom have had terrorist thoughts and hateridge all of their life. CIA gave them the skill to carry out thier beliefs, and when there was no more money and support comming from USA, they realized that all they have been are pawns in the cold war game between US and Russia. Well, people do not like to be used, and that is why they turned on their "users".

Default I agree 100%. CIA did not train thouse people to help them, in reality CIA used them

in the cold war as a tool to fight Russia.

Now we have to live with the consequences.

Maybe we should go after the parents and the grand parents, school teachers and anyone else that had anything to do with their up bringing?

Now is not the time for second guessing from the saftey of our PCs.

Default Yes we trained Afghan rebels to fight the communists envading their country

in fact most people who fought against the Soviet Union were Muslims from other countries. They only saw people who were envading as non-muslims and so which to destroy all non-muslims even those that had helped them. that's the worst part. we would not have tought them guerilla tactics if there was a conventional way to defeat the soviets but the only way for a small group of rebels to fight a conventional army is using unconventioal means. also remember that we did not give them help right out in the open. it was in fact one of the greatest covert operations in history. the soviets had no idea that we helped defeat them.

Default Re: Its always easy to "wash your hands" and say that "you" had no control over what has become.

It is said that if you provide food to a starving man you have ended his hunger. Until the next day when the food is gone and the hunger returns.
Give the starving man seeds and tools so that he can feed himself, and you eliminate hunger for that man forever.

A dog never bites the hand that feeds it.
Learn the ways of nature before you condemn your fellow man. Realise that everyone should be treated as equals, otherwise your time may end.
