Just go my turbo replaced under warranty..more
Good thing it was under warranty. Over $2000.00.
Ouch. The difference is amazing. I just barely accelerate and I'm up to 4K. Looking back, my turbo may not have been working since I bought the car back on July 1, that's how big of a difference there is. I may have to recant all the negative comments I have made about this cars performance off the line. Before I am asked again;
" MY CAR IS NOT CHIPPED ".
klutes 98.5 Silver 1.8TQMS I have paint chips though.

Re: turbo replaced under warranty
How did you/the Service find that the turbo was not good?
How many miles did you drive with the failing turbo?
how old is the car?
Now whan you say it, maybe my turbo can be bettered, but I doubt it - I can make 0-60 below 8 seconds (when counting 21, 22, and on). But why not let the service give me a full report?

That turbo price...
Don't get scared by the $2000 turbo replacement price. That's dealer part price and dealer labor at $40-$50 an hour. Just think, there are SO MANY of these K03 turbos out there, that you will be able to pick one up for a lot cheaper when it comes time to replace our turbos at 150,000 miles. I bet in 4 years when I am ready for a new turbo, I could pick one up for around $1000 or less, and install it myself.
I hope.
Christian J. Long

Answers to your questions
I took it in for my 15,000 mile service at 17,000 miles. I mentioned that I occasionally hear at ticking noise at idle. That's what tipped them off that there was a turbo problem. I bought the car new on July 1, 1998. I had told them at my 5k and 10k service that I thought I had a turbo problem because it was such a dog off the line. On both occasions, they said the computer didn't return any fault codes, so they wouldn't do anything about it. I don't know if I perhaps got a more knowledgable technician with my most recent service that had heard about a ticking/turbo problem or what.

Rebuild available also...
You can also get turbo rebuilt for even less - we used to get all our Porsche 935, 962 turbos
rebuilt (assuming they weren't totally blown up), and they were better than new. Of course your
car is out of commission during rebuild unless you have a spare?

Turbocharger rebuilds....
Majestic Turbocharger, Waco Texas 817 757 3759 ask for Kevin
I've had 3-4 (?) turbo'sfor Saabs rebuilt by them over the last 10+ years. Quick service, great prices (I don't think I ever spent more than $350 on a rebuild). Even a mechanical neophyte can remove and install a turbo from most cars in about 2-3 hours.
