just out of curiosity...how often do you need to change your fuel filter?

I would probably say 50-100K. 50K if you're in the habit of keeping your ride in
pristine working order, 100K if you only want to change things when it's absolutely necessary.
Rob Andrews changed the filter on his car around 55-60K miles, and he noted that the factory filter was plenty gunked up. Still, a lot of people here go well past 100K miles on the factory filter. As a guessimate, I would use 50K and 100K as the boundaries for your filter change. You decide how picky you want to be.
see www.robsaudiworld.com for a diy article on fuel filter changes for a QUATTRO (doesn't apply to FWD, but I think FWD is significantly easier, since the filter is not obscured by the fuel tank).

How-to: yes. STFA!!!
:-) Mike Staley did a step-by-step w/pics a while back, wasn't an Avant but the procedure should be close to the same. I've got a FF here waiting to go in....101K on the original, I think it's time. I just need to get out there and do it....hehe..
