K&N Air Filter/ Engine Idle problem!!
Any Techs that can answer this please!! I have a 99' 1.8T, with 35k, very well maintained. I put a K&N air filter (factory flat type) in. Engine's idle became low/rough. Took to dealer (Jim Ellis/Atlanta) said this happens all the time. Oil from new filter messed up the mass airflow sensor and it was getting "too much air", they replaced free with some other unknown items. Idle is normal again though. Does this make any sense?? I've put K&N air filters in all my vehicles. Jim Ellis seems to have excellent mechanics and service, long time Porsche/Audi dealer. This is my first German car though...I even tried unhooking the battery to reset the engine computer before taking to the dealer.

It has been reported before.
I am sure at least a couple folks here have reported similar problems - oil from the new filter on the MAF. It may be from an over-oiled filter.
Someone on another forum mentiond this was almost at epidemic proportions with WRX owners.
I found the K&N for my wifes old GSX was over oiled as it came out of the package. I wrapped it with old cotton towels overnight before installing it. Its the only one I have purchased with excess oil.

Thanks, guess I'm not crazy.
It was brand new out of the package too. Guess had too much oil on it. Never thought of that, due to all my other cars working fine with them. I'm scared to put it back in now....$40 bucks wasted.
