Looking at an A4
Took my first drive/ride in an A4 earlier today.
I'm looking at a used one, a '97. It has the 1.8T and it is also a quattro. I thought it rode very nice and would like to get a car with a smaller wheelbase in the fleet that I currently own. I did think that the AUTO tranny was a little choppy....seemed unsure of the gear it wanted to be in.
I have a couple quick question of the A4 experts.
1) When is the timing belt "scheduled" to be changed on the the 1.8??
2) When initally coming to a stop the cars rpms drop low, about 300-400 rpms, causing the car to shudder for a split second. After this initial drop it idles fine, 900 rpms, while at the stop but it will repeat this cycle at the next stop. Any ideas on what would cause this??
3) After running the A/C for a while the center vent starts blowing out frost and losses it's cooling effectivness. I had this problem in an old 928 I used to own but I sold the car before fixing it. What causes this??
I want to arm myself with some info incase I decide to have the dealer look at the "problems". I need to be ready for their "everything checks out" response.

IMO, I would bag the Automatic...find another one
Timing belt is still every 60K
Idle stabilizer valve?? (ISV).....years a go I had a Jetta that did the exact same thing....whaddya know, it was a 1.8

i agree. find a manual transmission. i have a 96 2.8 and had a similar problem with my idle. a month later the car started stalling while at a stop. the idle stabilizer had to be replaced for apprx. $300. i was past the coverage period. ouch.

i agree. get a manual. i have a 96 2.8 and had a similar problem with the idle. eventually the car started stalling at stops. the idle stabilizer had to be replaced. $300. past warrranty period. ouch.
