Question for all you of there:

I drive an 02' A4 1.8t with about 114k in mileage. Last summer I had the timing belt replaced but since attending grad school this past year, haven't really driven the car besides the times I have came home. Mind you the car is in need of maintenance, like oil change and etc. But in two different occasions when coming to a stop, the car has shut off and would eventually start up again with a little hesitation in the ignition. Upon starting, an EPC light would come on but would not come on again if the car was shut off and started again after the episode happening. You guys have any idea what this could be? I'm trying to get the most out of what this car has left since I really can't afford to get rid of it yet. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

oh, and also, when shifting between 2nd to 3rd, the RPM's will rev high and then drop to normal for about a second, but very noticeable. do these problems have anything to do with the timing belt and it's replacement?

A couple of other things.

1) What tranny do you have? Tip / CVT / quattro / fwd?
2) TB would have nothing to do with any of this.

Just had the same problem on my 04 and it was the Engine Speed Sensor. Pull the codes and they should point in the same directions.
