You need to go drive some of the newer DBW cars, like the mazada milliena.
Steering, throttle, and a couple of other things are DBW. Talk about driving comfortably numb.
I don't know what your talking about otherwise. My car feels solid on the road, and goes where I tell it to.

just a different experience than yours...
it is just fine, but something missing...a connection to the road. The only advantage I can see so far is getting out of a tight parking spot....not worth the trade-off, to me.

your A4 is much heavier than the 2002...you should be glad that you have power assist...
...you could always do something fancy, like install an electric pump set to shut off at a certain road speed...but it would be pretty involved. ;-)
