?
I guess you can tell if it's a sedan or an Avant.
You want to know what engine you have? Look at the motor. :-P
Did you win that thing in a used car lottery, or did you buy it because of the pretty color? ;-)

not to be rude,
but but what are you having troulble with? what exactly are you trying to get at? the year? first off, does it have an owners manual? i would look for that. or take some pics, we can easily tell you what year it is. if it has the little audi logo on the side, its a 96 or 97. if it has 1 piece headlights, its a 99.5 and up. and obviously, if you are having trouble figuring out if its a 1.8t or a v6, pop the hood. but how do you not know this stuff if you just bought the car?

Now you know not to never post a Stupid like that on Audiworld, Nevermind over the fact that we are harsh to newbies, so let that be your first lesson of the day. Anyway one easy way to find out what model A4 you have is look at the engine, if its a V6 its 2.8 and if its a 4 cyl. its 1.8T. Another way is the 2.8 A4's have a plastic chrome trim around the windows and 1.8T's don't.
Oh yeah, The T in 1.8T means Turbo!

Welcome to Audiworld! =)
This forum has nice people who like to help! But that's just a pretty funny question you posed.
Just pop the hood and you'll see a 1.8 Turbo 20 valve or a V6 = 2.8 on the engine cover. If it's a 1996, it would be a 12 valve V6.
Best way to find out is by the VIN# (Vehichle Identification Number). This will be written on your insurance. And phone your local Audi dealer and they can decode the year, model, when it was produced, etc. about your car.
Regardless of which A4 you have, it's a great car! Have fun with it!
Cheers!,
