Default MTM chip for Biturbo S4

Have been reading all the various posts about you chaps in the USA chipping your 1.8Ts and 2.8s. It all seems quite easy to me: open ECU, swap chip ..off you go. However, I just called our UK outlet for MTM (RB Racing) and they are telling me that I need to supply the ECU numbers to them weeks before they can do the work ( to order some parts) + it will take 3 hours to actually make the mod. (plus it costs $1600)
I queried this and apparently they don't replace the chip, they actually re program the original !
Does anyone have any insight into this ?
cheers
Guy
Default more complex ecu

I believe with newer cars that have drive by wire and other techno bable in the ecu it takes longer to chip and are also more complex

Default Yes...it is more difficult now......especially with cars with the newer (bi-turbo) engines

Pretty soon Audi will make it so you can't tinker at all with the car...it will be so sophisticated ...and very expensive to own and operate the equipment that will be needed. I understand some of the Porsches are now so sophisticated that all you can do is add an airfilter...any other changes totally mess up the cars tuning.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Default

With newer OBD][ systems, many of them can be "chipped" via download thru the diagnostic port, rather than adding a new E-PROM to the ECU board.
