Default Must the springs/shocks be removed when changing upper control arms?

I need to change both of my upper control arms which could be a DIY, but if I have to take the spring out and then im going to have to compress that spring... etc then I will pass on the DIY, i searched the FAQ and there is no write-ups about the control, TIA

Nope. Pull the whole upright out as a unit and swap the CA's. "Easy"

All the same - in fact they even cross over to other cars like the C5's etc.

Don't bother with used CA's too much of a pain to change to be worth used parts. Really.

IIRC All CA's are the same for B5 A4's. Not sure about Passats though. What you can do is unbolt the upper suspension plate and 'twist' it out of the way so you can get the one bolt out. Or, you can just cut the head of the bolt off with a dremel and slide it out as others have done.

that hard to remove?? the car is sitting on rotors and it'll take just minutes (i think) to take out since it all exposed, seems like to get CA on ebay for like $100 for all (4) and wait a week or get them for free and install today, what yu think?

Well... if the "pinch bolt" comes right out (on both cars) then fine - do it. But ---> More than likely it will NOT.
