my car stuttered, then died, then wouldn't start. now a check engine light is on. Damnit. Any help?

my car stuttered, then died, then wouldn't start. now a check engine light is on. Damnit. Any help?
the only thing i can say is that i was low on gas at the time and was about a block away from the gas station. Mile thingy just had hit "0". And after one no start crank, it started np.
dunno have dealer look at it?
Also i have 66k on my 97 a4 i need to replave timing belt asap. Dealer quote of 1k, resonable called an indie shop got quoted 900, but i dont want to go there because they wanted to use generic parts.
