Is my Uber A4 my last 4 cylinder car?? Some thoughts. . .
So as posted yesterday, my Stage 3 Avant is in the shop getting assorted rattles ironed out as well as the 30k service. Lets start here, I really like my car, and even with all my mods (check my sig) its still the same price as the BMW wagon and a LOT more car. A really nice value. Is it fast. Yes. Does it feel like a larger displacement engine, yes in higher gears at higher rpm on the highway, yes. But a couple of days with the 2.7T and wow. I'm so missing the low end torque of the larger displacement engines I'm more used to (first car 67 Pontiac Firebird with 4bl, headers, exhaust, you get the picture) second car Ford Probe GT (not a ton of torque, but a smooth responsive feel throuought the rpm). I miss that. I miss not having any lag. I'm not sure I car that these other cars are so much heavier than 4 cylinder wonder cars, the trade off might not be worth it. I'm just not sure. I'm eager to get my car back so that I can really enjoy its nimble feel, its easy revs and more visceral feel. But I've got to wonder what the s4 avant is like and whether I would enjoy that car so much more. One thing for certain, I've been contemplating my next car for a while and thinking about what older used sports cars I could afford. Thought about lotus esprit turbos and rx7 turbo and I am no doubt going to get at LEAST 6 cylinders and likely the 928s4 (who cares about upkeep :P). I want a v-8 and I want over 300hp and 300ft/lbs and that instant feel. So what if the 1/4 mile time is about the same as the stage 3, it feels so different. Stang guy, you must know this feeling well considering the other car you have. Anyone else have thoughts on this subject.

The 928 is awesome...
And since the air cooled 911 snobs hated it, they're actually pretty cheap. Upkeep can be a bit expensive though, so make sure you can swing a wrench.
Me... I want an 80's era Ferrari 308 GTB. Talk about expensive upkeep but I can't think of a more fun classic sports car for the weekends.

Yeah, less than 20k for a nice late 80's version. As to wrenching
I suck. But I"m willing to learn. Lucky for me DEVEK, one of the top 928 places in the country is 10 minutes from my house. They are the APR of 928's and design their own parts etc. I love ferraris, and the late 308's early 328's are starting to get to a reasonable point and if you got a fuel injected car it might be a lot easier.

Hold out for a 328 if you can afford one, the FI 308 is slow compared to the carbeurated one...
A friend of mine has a 308 with carbs, and it feels faster than the FI ones. The 328 quattorvalve is a rocket though..

So I've heard. I'm not going in that direction for sure. As soon as they f##king student loans are
paid off though, I'm increasing the stable of German cars at the house.

Re: The 928 is awesome...but yes, very costly to maintain...
I have a 944S (16v 187hp), and it is nice and snappy, but I always did prefer the looks of the 928S. The 944S eingine is just 1/2 of a 928S4 engine, so they are very similar. I talked to my local Porsche shop about a 928, and they like them as well, but warn me that if I though upkeep on a 4 cylinder "S" engine was bad, multiply that by 2 for the 928!
Oh well, as noted above the resale value is low so they are affordable to buy, but get ready for the maintenance.
My next P car is probably going to be a late 70s 911 or maybe a 944S2....most likely the 944S2. Great looking and at least the body/interior parts are cheap.

Hehehe... that's a problem you want to have...
Do I want the 308 or the 328... sigh... decisions decisions...
Actually that's probably about five years off since I just bought the A4 recently.
Ideally I'd be able to find a 2001 M5 around then and take advantage of the massive depreciation hit. Failing that I could easily "settle" for something with a prancing horse on the hood and a typically Italian mechanical temperment.

Re: RX7 twin turbo = Really good car!!
My .02 cents on this, the rx7 is a great car, not to mention the rotary engine.! Really great, as far as a daily driver. I drove mine daily, but in my opinion there better off kept as a weekend car. Although once you drive it, you will want to drive it every little chance you get. So keeping it as a weekend car is hard. As long as you keep it in good shape, change oil every 2k miles, and DO NOT MISS ONE! it will be a good to you. You can convert to single turbo making the vacuum hasle go away. I could go on and on about how great the 3rd generation rx7's are. But i will stop here.
