Default Need Help installing an Autodimming mirror

Hi! I have a 1996 A6 and I just bought a autodimming mirror which belongs to the 2001 A4 having the following wires GREEN, GREY, BROWN, WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW

PLUG HAS PART # 4B0971234, ON MIRROR PART # E102*0516.

Could somebody look up their Bentley and please tell me what are each of these wires used for??? I have a Benteley but it is for 1996 A6 and has no Autodimming mirror details

Thanks

Default Re: Need Help installing an Autodimming mirror

The bentley only shows one diagram for 1999-2001 dimming mirrors and lists the following:

1 - black/blue, +12V from ignition ON, via fuse S231
2 - brown, ground
3 - blue/ro, backup light
4 - violet/white, outside mirror (adjustment/-heated)
5 - violet, outside mirror (glass heater)
6 - red/green, front interior light

(After re-reading the following I tought I could be clearer, so it has been edited)

The colors above are as drawn coming from the mirror and the numbers are as listed (they may or may not relate to specific connector locations from the mirror).

The wires to the outside mirrors are commented in notes on the drawing and those comments are in paranthesis here. However when tracing the wires back in the diagrams they appear to control outside mirror dimming. The "adjustment" and "heating" functions for the outside mirrors come from other sources. Either way they would not be connected to anything in your '96.

The wires to the backup lights and interior light are intended to override the dimming action when those things occur - for safety. If you dont hook them up the mirror will just remain dim (at night).

Wonderful document, Bentley. Only slightly better than figuring it out on your own.
