Need some insight on 1998 A4 with 2.8
I have the oppertunity to pick up an Audi A4 2.8 in manual trans, with leather, sunroof, power everything, for $16500.... now I'd like some insight from you guys about the engine, the car, pretty much everything, I wanna know if the 2.8 is gonna be fast / slow or if it can be modded, and if you think thats a good price for the car. Please help me out by posting your thoughts, even if you don't own the car or anything like it.
Thanks a lot,
Greg

I have a '99 2.8, which is virtually identical.....
I absolutely love it. Great car. If I had to buy a new car today, an A4 2.8 would probably be my first choice.
I think it's quite fast, especially on the highway. Butter smooth and torquey. I do lots of road trips in the winter, driving from Providence to Vermont every weekend to go snowboarding. The feel, power, comfort and confidence on the highway, combined with quattro for the snow, makes this the perfect car for me. And let's not forget those windy Vermont roads =). For a fairly heavy car with a V6, it's surprisingly nimble.
I've done some mods (listed below in my sig). With the chip and the intake, I've probably squeezed another 15-20 horses out of it, and it has really made a nice difference. The sway bars have also done wonders to reduce body roll and understeer.
Other mods: exhaust (maybe 10hp), suspension, short shifter, and many others. And let's not forget the grand-daddy of all A4 mods: PES Tuning makes a supercharger that will pump up a 2.8 30V to 290+ hp. But it's pricey at 5k.
But the car doesn't really need mods. It's a great car bone stock. And $16.5k sounds like a good price. How many miles are on it? Does it have the sport package?

I have a 98.5 2.8... I cannot say enough about the car...
Mine has the auto w/tip, quattro, sport, cold weather, Bose, sunroof... the works. It's about as heavy as these boys get. The car is suprisingly nimble and quite fast. Don't read "nimble" as "nimble for a heavy car". It won't pounce but it will leap from lane to lane with ease. I can't even describe how stable the handling is... it gives you a lot of comfort at speeds over 100mph. I picked mine up with 36k for 23k. If yours is close to mine at that price then it is a steal. The 98.0 is short on a few features (mostly the side airbags) but it's still terrific. Oh, and I forgot to mention... the 2.8 is smoooooooth. If you like a sophisticated ride then it would be hard to find better. Ok, I'm done... can you tell that I like my car???

Pop the hood, see if it says "5V" on the engine cover...
IF so, then it's a 1998.5 30V engine, producing stock 190hp and tons of fun (I have one)
If not, then it's a 12V engine producing 170-ish hp, not as fun but still fun I hear.
The 30V engine has a 10hp chip, but if you want a racer there is a $5,000 supercharger that gives you 280+ hp and is very solid. I've been looking into them for a year now, I haven't heard of even ONE of these kits blowing up yet, and they've been out for years. www.pes-tuning.com
If the miles are low, and it's been well maintained, go for it. I also suggest you get an extended warranty from someone, near 60-90,000 miles the timing belt has been known to fail.
