New A4 Owner
Just thought I'd introduce myself. I use to be on the 90 forum. I had a 55k mile 1988 90 that I just sold to some lucky guy

I replaced it with a 2000 1.8TQ 5sp with heated cloth sport seats.

I'm not going to Mod the A4 much, it's supposed to be my highway car. When I want some kicks, I take my track prep'ed Miata out (see link).

My Miata web page

Ask SameerP...
Sorry, but mod for mod, the Miata would eat the Audi on any small to medium sized track. I've been auto-x and tracking cars for years. As much as I like Quattros, I have to respect the Miata for a track machine.

I don't know why I see this "girly" thing about the Miata. There's nothing like a RWD roadster for
pure driving fun. The Miata is a great retro british-style open-top sports car and can be modded nearly as much as an A4.
If I didn't live in NH or could afford more than one car, I'd own one.

no, you claim the Miata is a "girly" car...(and your Elise comment as well)
You did not make this an "apple to oranges" discussion...you claim that since the Miata is a "girly" car, it should not be modded. If anything, his Miata responds far better to mods than an A4. A simple $300 Racing Beat suspension pulled a 1.01g on the skidpad...the list goes on and on.
The Miata is a pure sports car with an open top, fully independent double wishbone suspension, a LSD, close-ration 5 speed, and a DOHC I4 which is a turbo motor (though not offered with a turbo) so the aftermarket can safely boost it to 230+ RWHP. THAT, my friend, is the definition of a sports car. The only reason its "girly" to you is because its small, and Americans don't embrace small cars.
As for the Elise comment, once again you are mistaken. Mazda explicitly created in the Miata a modern Elise. Bob Hotaling, the man who originally penned the design in 1979, was a great admirer of the Elise, and Mazda set out to make a small, light open sports car...ala Elise. That is why the car has a pleasant demeanor, chrome rings around gauges, and many other little touches. Mazda wanted to make a pure, fun British sports car with Japanese reliability. That is also why the Miata has a torquey moderate output engine instead of a screamer.
The Miata is every-bit as much a sports car as an A4 attempts to be a sports sedan. The only difference is you do not need to mod a Miata like A4s require to run them hard. The turbo kits for the Miata are every bit as ferocious as A4 kits, but the difference is 230-240 RWHP in a 2400lb car will utterly demolish 300hp BHP in a 3400lb A4.
Every one of my local friends that has driven my Miata wants one...go to any autocross and you will see Miatas. There isn't a real enthusiast (not car magazine enthusiasts, like you) who does not respect a Miata. When people with SIII S4's tell me how nice Miatas handle...that should give you a clue. When S2k owners say the reason they got their cars is for more power, and not for better handling, that is another clue. There is not a car under 30k, and only 1 under 35k, which can hold a candle to the Miata's handling prowess.
With a FM turbo kit (link below) you will run down anything in the straights, and leave em in the curves. There is not a more hardcore group of enthusiasts.
German car companies make "musclecars" like the M coupe, the Americans can make German style sports sedans like the Lincoln LS...then the Japanese can definitely make a traditional British roadster.
So, anything else to mouth off?
Cheers,
