New Audi owner, and Audi World member...
So, i'm new to the audi scene, just picked up a 99 1.8t quattro with tiptronic and about 84k miles on it. I've been reading a lot about this timing belt problem that happens to these models. I do not know if the timing belt has been replaced, and the previous owner cannot be contacted.
My question is, is it easy to determine if the belt has been replaced without taking off the whole front of the car? Also, how tough of an operation is this, i'm not the best mechanic, but i can follow instructions, and have access to quite a few tools.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry to stereotype, fellas, but if it's a 1.8T tip, then it was probably a non-enthusiast owner
I'd lean towards the t-belt not being done, since enthusiasts are the ones that came up with the 60k rule. Better safe than sorry.

Terrible assumption. I have a 1.8T auto(non-tip) and changed the t-belt at 55K.
I also have chip, suspension w/ sways and have seen a bunch of heavily modded A4 1.8T tip cars in the past years. I live breath and **** Audi A4, so I wouldn't judge if a guy is a true enthusiast by the tranny type. However, I will admit I should have waited for the manual 1.8T to arrive to the states. I am not living up to my full enthusiast potential with this crappy automatic. That is why it is going bye bye..and a 1.8T/quattro/manual is taking its place. You never know with the history of these cars, if the owner kept up on maintenace or not. Example: My father is not an enthusiast at all and does not work on his own car, but he is big on preventative maintenance. Anyone who buys a used car that he has had, is getting a well maintained car. You just can't assume with these used cars. That is why I am waiting for the right one to buy.

Re: if in doubt change it!
I was checking out ECS for a timing belt solution. My VIN is WAUCB28D9XA248615, should i believe this is an early version?

I'd give Mike Kim at Pure Motorsport a call
give him your VIN number and you'll get the correct, good quality parts the first time.

Pure Motorsport
