Default noob question: can you mix different oil mfgrs of same viscosity?

ie Redline 5w30 synth with Mobil 1 5w30 synth? Doubting it. I need to add some but have no idea what the dealer used (I know it was 5w30 synth, but don't know who made it). Do I need to call them and find out what type it is?

And no I won't be getting oil changes at the dealer from now on. It was the first service done after I bought the car used out of warranty and wanted them to do the first service / check everything out.

TIA.

Andrew

Default if your questions should state, can i add 1 qt of redline to an engine full of mobil, yes.

if you're going to mix them to pour them in don't be cheap go buy the full amount of one brand and use it.

I've mixed different viscosities before. Never had a problem.

Default Just to top-off, no probs. Grades of Mobil 1 Supersyn mix fine. "Additive Clash" is a concern with

different brands and formulations. It's basicly a crapshoot unless it's the same brand/formula. It's best to only mix for desired viscosity. I keep basestocks the same, therefore additives the same. I never try to improve a dino oil by adding a q of synth or anything, but I do mix oils like 30 weight Chevron Supreme or Havoline with Chevron Delo 15w-40 for thickening (or thinning depending on how you look at it) and additive boost. Both are Gruppe II/II+ basestocks and the maker is the same. I find this 3-componet viscosity calculator from Shell to be handy.

http://www.shellglobalsolutions.com/base_oils/toolbox/toolbox.htm</a

RL is kind of a wierd oil.I'd top with a low additive+HQ basestock oil like Mobil Clean 5000,a G-III
