Default Oil Changes

My dealer tells me a 5,000 mile interval for oil changes is fine. Any other 2001 1.8T owners got opinions? Also, will I notice a difference between the dealer's oil change and a local Citgo's oil change? Should I buy a K&N oil filter, for instance?

Default 5k is fine for oil changes. I would do them yourself, buy some

mobil1 and an OEM filter. Personally I would never take my car to a Citgo, Midas or any of those types of places, depending upon mileage you should still be under warranty and oil changes are free done by the dealer.

Default my 944's manual says every 7000 miles, but I did it every 3500-4000 mi

do you like dirty bath water?

if not, then change you oil earlier

if yes, then wait.

Actually, my car has 61,000 miles on it. I think I'm beyond warranty.

Default please stay away from Jiffy Lube type places - too many horror stories...

As far as oil change interval, try searching the archives - this question comes up several times a week. If you want to run longer than 5K miles, I'd strongly suggest using synthetic oil.

Default I seccond both of those notions

Jiffy lube is no place for any car of a respectable marque.

They dont use the OEM filter, they dont use good oil and they have very little experience with german cars.

Its very VERY risky taking your car to them for anything at all.

There are only 3 places that should ever work on your car.

You in your garage
Your Stealership
Your chosen euro specialist mechanic.

You would be beyond the warranty, in that case save yourself the dough and do the oil yourself. Very easy and good write up's in the tech section.

Default hardest part is removing the plastic engine bay cover.

the filter is accessable.

any Kmart type store sells oil and the tool to get the filter off. The OEM filter is $11.66.

Get synthetic oil.

I've changed the oil on numerous cars. Its quite easy.

Horror Story for Jiffy Lube!

My friend/coworker and I were on our way to a client (local police department) and we happened to drive by the local Jiffy Lube to witness about 5 guys CHASING AFTER a car rolling out of a bay down a slight slope. One guy barely got in front of it and stopped it before it rolled into the street during a very busy time. Shortly thereafter, we arrive at the police department and begin to relate our experience to the cop we deal with (who happens to be in traffic) and he said that they've had incidents with the Jiffy Lube in the past, including a time where a 15 year old kid driving a car in or out of a bay smacked it into another. Nothing but quality at Jiffy Lube!
