Oil FAQ didnt answer this question...10W-30 ok for winter?
The guy was out of 5w-30 but he said 10w-30 was fine. I have a 2001 A4 2.8L, and was just wondering if this viscosity oil would be OK? I should also mention that its Mobil 1 oil, and that I live in upstate NY where it can be in the negative degrees for weeks at a time.

i would go with 5..
from experience...
i've changed oil when i was in the yukon on vehicles with 5 and vehicles with 10 during very cold temperatures.
both turned somewhat thicker.. but the 10 did take longer to drain.. much slower process..

10w cranking spec is rated at -20f. 30 weight could be too thin in hot temps or hwy driving.
Splash it with some 5w-30 if it gets cold, 15w or 10w-40 if it gets hot.
What brand of oil? A lot of shops use Conoco brands (Trop Artic/Kendall/76) Pennzoil or Castrol.

Does it still say "Euro Formula" and "Pours at -65f"?It's not the same anymore, replaced w/ESP 5w-40
for current service fills. Latest bottles say "pours at -45f" and not "Euro Formula". I dunno if the VW 503.01 and MB 229.3 were dropped from the 0w-40 spec list.<ul><li><a href="http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=793629&an=0& page=0&gonew=1#UNREAD">http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=793629&an=0& page=0&gonew=1#UNREAD</a
