OK I know this has already been discussed at length, but
I was speaking with one of the well known VW/Audi tuners in So. Cal. he was telling me that I could expect some pinging from theie chip upgrade, under certain conditions (ie. under heavy load, very hot day, or if I'm really really on it?). Is this true? He also mentioned that they can ping from the factory and that if i went out right now and drove the stock car hard that i might hear a ping or two. This part is definately not true for me so far. i hear nothing but the subdued whistle of the turbo. I also understand that a few or mild pinging is different from a machine gun type sound. I somewhat confused because to me pinging would be unacceptable. Am I being unreasonable?

More Pinging Stuff...
Read my post above regarding chip upgrades. The person you spoke to is correct. Many unmodified cars (turbo or otherwise) will ping in certain condtions (off idle, heavy load with poor fuel, way to high a gear in very low RPM pulls, etc.). The distinction between a couple of pings, and a "machine gun" staccato of detonation are completely different. If you stay in the throttle with sever pinging, you WILL destroy your motor. Severe pinging isn't good for any car, but turbo cars simply don't tolerate it.
Regards,
Searl
