I know enough never to go to a doctor.... :)
OK, here's a quick rundown on HMO vs. PPO:
HMO - bad plan in my book, only worth it if you have a family with kids that need lots of medical care and check-ups. Advantage: low co-pays (usually around $15 a visit) and lower premiums, Disadvantage: your primary care physician has to authorize all of your specialist visits (and he may not want to authorize all of your spec visits), and you have NO benefits if you see a provider outside the healthplan's panel.
PPO - great plan in my book (it's what I have). Premiums are higher than HMOs, and your co-pays will be higher. But, you do not need authorization from a primary care provider to see specialists, and you can see out of network physicians, and the plan will usually still pay 80% of the cost (after you satisfy your out of pocket maximum for the year).
Give me a call and I can answer any questions you may have. I do not know the Miami market very well, so I cannot tell you who will have the best panel of providers down there, but I will be able to tell you what to look for in a health plan.
