Default one of the entry level Panasonics have good bang for the buck...

with or without progressive scan, depending on whether you have (or plan on getting) a progressive scan TV.

I don't know anything about Onkyo's DVD player quality.

Default I have a Sony...

bought about 2 years ago. Can't remember the model #, they've changed it by now anyway.

You get a very good picture quality with it, but the problem with Sony is that their laser lenses are very sensitive to scratches and dirt on discs. I noticed that not only with their DVD players, but also with CD players (home and portable). Unless the disc is brand new and spotless, you're going to have to put up with quite a lot of skipping. Most of the discs that I rent from video rental stores skip badly. This is very annoying when watching movies and suddenly the player jumps a few chapters back or forward, and then you have to go back and find the place where you were (and try to clean the disc first).

On the other hand, the Panasonics are very good about that. I bought one for my g/f a year or two ago, and it plays everything, even scratched up and dirty. The picture and sound is great as well. Non-progressive.

Default I've been happy with my Panny DVD-CP67K.

It's a 5 disc, progressive scan. Available in silver also (CP67S). Got it from Amazon for $199.

Default If you want non-progressive scan then get a philips or panisonic.

Stay away from the Raite and other off brands. Sometimes they are multi-region (region free) and rental discs won't play in them and some store bought discs.

Any new entry models from Philips or Panisonic are great (I have two philips w/ and w/out progressive scan and they work great).

I haven't tried any of the Toshiba's but I hear they are great too.
