EVAP System: Large Leak Detected
P0455

Ok so I have checked all the connections in the engine bay and along the lines on the underneath the car back to the fuel tank. I cant seem to find a leak. I can smell fuel inside the car though on ocasion. I checked the purge valve on top of the airbox and it was making a clicking sound. Is it suppose to make that clicking sound? I also have read it could be the fuel cap? Or the fuel cap not tight enough. How do you know if it is the fuel cap? Any suggestions would be great I need to get this fixed asap to pass inspection.

Clicking noise is normal and indicates the purge valve is working. Did you check the carbon canister in the spare tire well under the car? Checking the fuel cap is easy: just take it off and look at the seal. Is it cracked? It's cheap enough to just replace it though and be done with it. Get a new OEM from the dealer, they are vastly superior to any aftermarket.

no I have not checked the canister under the car. I didnt even know there was one there. Is it under the plastic cover attached to the spare tire bowl. What exactly will I be looking for under there. I do notice that the fuel smell seems to be stronger in the trunk.

It's just a canister, big ol' part. It's under that plastic cover.

What year, engine, and trans do you have? I can look up the part number for you.

Service manual would be able to tell you how to test it.

Why do people continue to give ECS business? I don't get it. PN 8D0201801E is $147.60 from the DEALER.

read through the evap system components in manual and doesn't give a way to test it. I use ecs to get a round about number to see how much it will cost there is alocal german autoparts store that i get my parts from and they dont have a site I can get it from them for 139.00 . I'd still like to know if it can be tested. I mean it saying large leak. Shouldnt it be easy to find? I did notice when I was in my trunk on the right side of the trunk where the 2 bolts hold the rear bumper there was a ground wire that goes to the leak detection pump that wasnt grounded. So i grounded it and now im waiting to hear back from my freind who has a vag com to scan it. But that shouldn't cause a leak should it? Just curious for your insight.

EVAP system tester is a smoker. You disconnect a line, attach the smoker nozzle, and look for a leak.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? My check engine light went on yesterday and I got the same fault code.
