Sorry Volvo, there's no contest; the A4 is an infinitely better-looking vehicle. The S40 just looks old. I also took a look inside...that 4-speed automatic may be nice, if you like that kind of thing, but refusing to even sell a manual shifter is a bad decision IMO, even if only 16% of the cars in the US are sold with one these days. I mean c'mon, how can you call it an "exciting, intelligent and definitely not a 'point and drive' car" (see volvocars.com) when the driver is prohibited from having control over shifts? And that interior...the dash in particular looks cheapo, making the glossy wood trim look all the more out of place. No doubt the S40 is competent in several areas. But "exciting"? Hardly. And compared to the A4, well, like I said, no contest.<p>Rick

Looked into one, didn't even test drive, the door is light, feels hollow and smaller than A4.

Volvos are plastic, cheap, boxy, old-looking, ugly, not nice to drive. Just look at S80 taillights..
