Passat W8--271HP & 278lb.ft, Why Not in A4????!?!?!WTF!

Purely marketing...
Since VW will not have a more upscale car than the Passat until the Phaeton arrives, they can do whatever they please. Really though, the reason why they put the V8 in the Passat is to move it into a market Camry, Accord, and etc have never been. Since it's VW's long term plan to compete with MB and Audi with BMW. BTW, they are putting a V8 in the upcoming S4... but they never will in the A4.

That is directly related to the turbo failures...
could you imagine how much money Audi spent in warranty work for the S4? I suppose only using turbos in the RS model will be more sensible, seeing as how they will be pretty rare.

because that engine isn't very impressive
Read some of the reviews of the W8 on VWVortex. A General consesus is "Good Try, but not much better than the V6 Passat".
It's a waste of money for a passat, and NO ONE would buy an A4 with a V8 engine. It's not meant to have an engine that big.

Exactly, German auto media have handed VW a big thumbs down on it . . .
Quite uniformly, the German auto media have said that VW failed to get V-8 performance from the W-8. Almost everyone has complained that the W-8 performs far worse than MB V-6 and that the VW engineers have also failed miserably to get the gearing right.
It looks like VW's new W concept still needs some fine tuning before the compact W design performs comparably to the longer V design. In theory, it should perform comparably. Two additional cylinders should yield more power regardless of whether one puts them in a V or W configuration.
Its shocking to think that VW may have failed to test its new W-8 against competitors' V-6's and I-6's. What an embarrassment for the VW mark to add two cylinders and lose power against the competition. Hopefully, the new AUDI S4 uses the existing V-8 configuration rather than borrows the W-8 from VW.
