Why Aluminum?
You dont really need aluminum... steel will work equally well because it will reflect radiant energy. Also the steel/zinc you get at home depot is very thin so its easier to cut and flexible enough to go into the engine bay.
If you must go aluminum (more expensive) then I hear 16ga is a good thickness.
The benefits in aluminum vs. the steel is not worth the cost. Also make sure you create a air pocket in addition to some kind of insulation (fiberglass/refletix).

i picked up an exhaust heat shield from the junk yard...
the one they use to around the muffler so that the heat wont go into the cabin/trunk. works fine for me but if you can get your hands on the volvo firewall thingy, its better. its sorta like aluminum foil (bends easily) but does wonders for cooling. afaik, volvo uses it on their firewalls. good luck
