because most 2.8liter cars with superchargers don't put out as much power as the big turbo setups
many of which are custom setups in this competition. That and they wanted a competition that would be diverse with models, not just an A4 or passat. 1.8t motors are used in 7 audi/vw cars world wide. That and the competition was for a 1.8t motor not a 2.8 challenge.

You're asking about why he chose to supercharge a 1.8 engine, rather than a 2.8, and Paul is telling you why you wouldn't want to turbocharge a 2.8.
