Power Steering Pump
Hey guys, new to the Audi's and audi forums as well. Used to own an mk3 supra and traded it for my new 1997 Audi A4 B4 Quattro(Auto). Needed something safer for my kid on the way and something better on gas. Anyways, my power steering pump is leaking so I am just going to change it out. The question I have is, when I went to car-parts.com to find one from a scrapped car, I called a few places and they said I need the last 6 digits on the VIN number to have the right pump(of course they don't have "my" pump). Are the pumps not the same on the 1.8L Turbo models? I don't see what would be different, any help on whether this is true or not would be great. Thanks again guys!

There are two style pumps for that year. If you have VIN range 000000-180000, it takes a 8D0-145-156A(X). For VINs 180001 and up, it takes 8D0-145-156K(X). They are both ZF pumps. On the Passat, it would only be the latter pump, 8D0-145-156K(X), as it came out in 1998 with the 1.8T. The pumps are mainly reman now, so the (X) on the end of the part number is what I added in case you come across one.

Just be certain that the leak isn't at the banjo hose connections, or the hose itself. I recently changed the pump on my V6 because it was just worn out, plus leaking in air. However we have a Passat 1.8T, which was dripping fluid near the pump, but it turned out to be a faulty pressure hose. So unless you are already certain, clean the pump, then run to see where the fluid comes from.
