Default Is quattro really slower than FWD?

I was reading a post down below where somebody had mentioned that the added weight of the quattro will slow it down in 0-60 times. Intuitively, this makes sense (and it was one of the reasons I wanted FWD when looking for my car), however, I would assume the gearing would be different in the quattro to help compensate for the weight disadvantage in the drivetrain?? Audi's published numbers differ by a few tenths (even less on the 2.8). I'm just curious, anybody care to enlighten me?

Default Doesn't feel slower, and in rain or in other foul weather quattro is probably faster

Default Re: Is quattro really slower than FWD?

Yeah it's slower 0-60 than a FWD A4 in stock form...once you start to modify the car you'll find that the FWD is far slower 0-60 than the Quattro...the 1/4 mile is another story...the front drive can make up for its poor launch with lower weight and driveline loss.

Now side by side on the highway I'd wanna be in the FWD it's a fair bit faster...less weight and less driveline loss account for this difference.

Default 200 pounds & less efficient driveline...

= slower and worse gas mileage. But in rain or otherwise the quattro would be faster accelerating out of turns. And in snow, a world of difference.

Default The FWD is going...

..to be faster initially because many stock Audi's aren't exactly power hogs. With low torque the added weight of the quattro system is a hindrence(at first). Once you upgrade enough things that the wheels will lose traction with FWD than the quattro will be faster! It's simple physics, in (most)stock Audi's there is plenty of grip in both FWD and quattro models. As one adds chips, exhausts...ect, the need for grip is increased. Once a certain level is reached the FWD tires are no longer going to be able to produce adequate grip(here the quattro's added weight is a benefit)!! At this point the quattro will become faster!!

With an S4 I don't imagine that FWD is faster(if they even come in FWD)!!

Default Depends....maybe.....

I had a 1.0 bar chipped '98.5 1.8t FWD, and it was fast, but I lost a lot of 0-60 time with wheelspin. In a Quattro, you would have better launches and therefore could get some better 0-60 times....i'll know for sure when I chip my new '00 A4 1.8tq. Gtech had my old A4 at 6.8 seconds to 60, we'll see about the Quattro.

PS-you all have heard by now the rumor that '00 1.8tq have already been coming with the 170hp engine, mine sure feels like it. I'll use the GTech to confirm this.<p>Christian J. Long
