Default Quattro Transmission Rebuild?

Hi all:

I have a 1999 A4 Quattro 2.8 with the tiptronic tranny. Unfortunately, the other day the tranny started slipping on a steep hill. The mechanic says that the torque converter seal is ruptured and that there were small pieces of metal in the tranny fluid. They replaced the fluid, and I drove it a short distance, but it was not shifting smoothly and popped into neutral a couple of times, and there was tranny fluid seeping out under the car, so I parked it. They think it needs to be rebuilt and that it would probably cost around 4 grand. Does anyone know if there is a mechanic in the Los Angeles area who can do it for less than that? The car is (was) only worth about 7 thousand before the tranny problem, with 130,000 miles on it, so it doesn't make sense to me to put another 4,000 into it. (The only reason I'm considering it at all is that the loan isn't paid off yet, so I can't sell it.) Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

You can certainly get a new used transmission for a lot less than $4K

Default Call Jose at Eurotech

You can try Jose at Eurotech Motors 310.575.9705 11800 Pico Blvd. He might be able to help.
But you'll probably end up buying one from a scrap yard.

Default Just had mine done under warranty...

When I saw the total that was billed to Audi it wasn't as bad as I thought. Apparently there has been a dramatic price reduction on the cost of the tranny as charged by Audi. they billed about $4500 for the trans installed, by the dealer. It runs great now. But I have only put 150 miles on it since picking it up Wednesday. Also, Phoenix Transmissions sells reman units on ebay for $1700 plus about $200 to ship including a warranty. I think you could find someone to install for $400-500.

Thanks for your responses. I'll call around tomorrow, including Jose at Eurotech. I didn't find out about this until Friday afternoon so I haven't been able to find out much over the weekend. Re: "You can certainly...." are you saying that including labor I should be able to do better than 4k?

Thanks
