Default Question...

I know its a lil long but i need advice-

I am on the search for a new car. I own a 1999 Audi A4 1.8t quattro tiptronic. I bought it with 68,000 miles. The Audi now has 98,000 miles and im starting to relize what an Audi owner is like.
I have a lot of engine problems and I dont mind paying to get it fix but its nearing 100,000 miles and i know in the near future i will have to constanly dish more money to keep it running smooth. My question is, should i buy a new engine? New engine means the car is new???? Im not very smart with cars but thats how i see it. I love my audi too much to sell her, and dont have that much money to buy a new Audi so is it smart to replace her with a whole new engine? If yes what else should i do besides simply changing the engine?
THanks for reading and i will appreciate your advice
Tommy

Default if you don't need a new engine don't buy one

as long as you keep up with the recommended maintence the engine should last a long time.

Default 100k miles on that engine is not much. The problems you will have in the future ...

will happen with a newer engine as well. The engine should run solid as long as you keep up with oil changes and everything that is recommended when needed. The problems with these cars usually occur at any time, and not with the engine other than sludge. Which will not happen as long as you keep up with oil changes.

185,000 miles and it's still going strong, except for the boost leak somewhere.

Default no... (long-ish-esque)

a) new engine doesn't always = better. It could be maintenance that's killing you. (as mentioned below)

b) cost is worth more then half the car... when you do that serious of a modification... it better be a drastic change... new engine will just get you back to stock

c) rebuild the one you have. A reputable shop should be able to do it significantly cheaper, have some lightweight parts thrown in.. and enjoy a more power

d)Factor in the cost you want to spend... add this to the value you think you could get for your car.. and seriously look into another a4. (i know you said you don't want to sell it). but just check the numbers.. you may be surprised how cheap it is to get into a "newer" audi. Since the release of the B7... b5's are going cheap. Which doesn't bode well for the people selling, but the people buying are in heaven . Good luck keep us posted
