question about audi factory stereo and installing new cd player
i just bought a 96 A4 2.8 quattro and its got the stock tape player/radio in the dash. I really like the way the stock system sounds but i want to put an aftermarket cd player in bc like most everyone, i wanna play cd's in my car. does the stock system that comes in the audi have any kind of amp in it to make the factory speakers sound good. basically i'm wondering if i will lose sound quality by puttin in an aftermarket cd player in the dash. if anyone has already done this to their a4 or has any info for me that would really help, thanks a lot. A new head unit will sound better because the built in amp is alot stronger than stock.
Also, did you consider buying an oem cd changer? Thats another option if you want to keep the stock look of the car.

i've considered a cd changer but i like to be able to change to any cd at anytime. i've had a disc changer in a previous car and i'm not a huge fan of them. what is the oem cd changer, is that the same thing as what i'm talking about?

On the 96 and 97's the OEM changer is made by Alpine.
The head unit is made by Blaupunkt (bosch) . This setup is Audi only. Neither the head unit or the changer is compatible with any other. It is an 8 pin M-bus setup. There are no adapters either.Your choices for your CD are, replace with aftermarket, add an RF changer or find an OEM M-Bus changer on E-Bay. That is all.
