Default Question on Codes and Erasing Them

Ok...with Kris' help I found my CEL and it was on again so I cleared the code with a borrowed OBDII tool. Now, how long can I expect it to take to trip the Check engine light and get the code (P0401 - EGR) again if it still not working? I cleaned her all up as many said here and wondering how long it will take for code to pop up. Also to verify...does just disconnecting the battery for a while clear the code or must they be cleared with the TOOL...??

Thanks all

Disconnecting the battery will not clear the code and will probably make the car run worse as all the "learned info" is lost. Also any ready codes are potentially lost.

All fault codes have different parameters, some will show up the first time the fault occurs and clear immediately once the problem is repaired.

The EGR error takes 4-7 cycles to return.

Mine would take up to several days to turn on the CEL, and the EGR passage was totally plugged. Now that its been cleaned out, there are no codes at all. If you've done a reasonable job of cleaning the EGR valve and manifold passage, you're probably home-free, and won't get another P0401 for a long time.

What is a "cycle"? Is a cycle a certain period of time or a certain number of miles?

Driven 2 days and 75 miles and no return light. Plus sounds like then the code i cleared was the original code as I borrowed a ODB Tool from local auto store.

Ok.....thanks...so far nothing but we will see.

Cycles vary by code. So a misfire code might clear immediately once you change the coil or spark plug for example.

It is to actually check the car under normal operating conditions.Just like you can't clear the code and drive to the smog test, you can't just leave the car idling in your driveway to clear the EGR code. (Otherwise everyone would do that to pass emissions)

EGR requires something like cold start, warm up to temp, run at 3500 rpm. It's part of OBD II specs.

Last time I cleaned my EGR, I didn't bother clearing the code, it took about 2 weeks to clear on its own.

You can check whether EGR is working my monitoring intake temps in VAG.com. Rev the car up and you should see the temp increase as the valve opens.
