there are fuses under the relay panel. those are the ones you need to check.

Default Just pulled all the ones I can see out and checked. All were fine.

There were two AL-lookin' ones toward the left that I couldn't visually check, but the ones that are clear, none are bad.

*scratches head*

Is there a ground connection for the relay panel that I can check?

At least now I know there's a second relay panel behind the main one without the fuses. I think my electric fan problem might be caused by one of the relays back there. (That started before all this non sense.)

Default i know where the fan relays are...if you think they could be the problem you should pull them.

way up to the upper left most relays...waaaay back there. two grey fan relays. the left most one is the highspeed relay, the right is the low speed relay.

Default Pulled those and they look more burnt than the load reduction relay.

Looks like another trip to the VW dealer. This would probably explain my electric cooling fan problem.

Still doesn't solve anything with the headlights/blinkers/air, etc though. :-\

Default have you tried the car without them in? also those two fuses that you couldnt verify...

you should test them with an ohmmeter.

Default The car still runs fine without the two cooling fan relays. (well, until it overheats =P)

The car also runs fine without the load reduction relay.

Same problem persists with all three mentioned relays pulled.

I'll check the fuses tonight when I get home to the multimeter.

In the meantime, I also went ahead and grabbed an ignition switch from the local VW dealer just in case because the symptoms are fairly close to what I have. It's not too big of a problem since I am pretty sure it'll take me less than 30 minutes to replace it now that I've torn apart the steering column once already. I figured it's an 8+ year part on my car and replacing it is probably a good idea regardless of whatever problems I might have.

One thing I recalled was my dad borrowing my car a few nights ago when all these problems started. He has a copied key instead of the original. I've used it before and it works, but maybe it was just different enough to mess with the ignition switch when he used it. Just wishful thinking, I'm sure, but I'll be able to better diagnose WTF is going on with the car once I replace the switch.

*fingers crossed*
