I'm in the market to buy my first Audi. I've fallen in love with the A4's styling and handling. I checked out the specifications in the "historic" section of the AudioWorld Model Guide and noticed some pretty significant differences between the 1997 2.8L and 1998 2.8L engines -- namely, the jump from 12 valves to 30, and a nice jump in horsepower as well. I am *presuming* that both the 1998 and 1998.5 have the 30v 2.8L engine, but I could very easily be wrong on that (please correct me if I am).

My query to all of you -- how can I tell a 1997 from a 1998 from a 1998.5 MY A4 with the 2.8L engine? I don't want to get screwed over by some scummy (or innocent but dummm) dealer or private seller. Follow up question to that -- is it worth bothering about the difference between the 1998 and 1998.5 models? I know there is a difference in the ABS system (5.1 vs 5.3?) but what else?

go 98.5 just look for the build date on the sticker of the car.
