Default Talk about platform sharing: Look inside a Jag S-class. Has Ford written all over it....

The buttons and trim are on the "cheap" looking side. I'm glad I saved my money and got an A4. I don't think VW has anything to worry about as long as the outside and inside designs stay unique.

Default My opinion on platform engineering....

VWAG has the best platform engineering strategy in the automotive industry. You feel completely different even if you are in the same A4 platformed vehicles. If you have driven an Audi TT and VW Golf, you know you are in a different cars. The Golf and TT have different characters, different chassis tuning and different engine configuration. When I driving my Bora, I don't have the same feeling as the Audi TT sports car because the Bora has a more sedan feel than the Audi sports car.
If you have driven an A4, A6 and Passat; you should know how radical the differences they are. The A4 is a true sports sedan in every senses, an S4 is just one more example on how well Audi can engineered an already excellent sports sedan into an ultimate one. The Passat shares the same platform and engines as the A4; however, the Passat has a more comfortable interior which it doesn't have the sharpness feel of the A4. Because of this platform sharing, the Passat benefits the technology from Audi which also sets itself as the benchmark of family sedan. A6 is a luxury car, with performance and handling to match especially on the 2.7T and 4.2. A6 uses the same B5 chassis as the A4 and Passat cousins; however, you feel more like in a luxury sports sedan than any of the cars I have mentioned on using the B5 chassis.
The Skoda targets as an afforable way into the high-quality VWAG family with Fabia and Octavia. Seat uses the existing VWAG platform to creates performance products with affordable driving pleasure in mind, so much so identical to the day when VW introduced their Golf I and II GTI hot hatch. "Ultimate Driving Pleasure" is Seat's slogan in UK.
VW itself will go upmarket with Mercedes-Benz while Audi had already been very successful targeting BMW. As my girlfriend found out in Europe, Skoda is a very different car than any VW or Seat, so its no surprise they are targeted to different audience. She actually sat in all VWAG products in Frankfurt auto show, she felt even the seat bolsters and seat contours are different in a Toledo to a Bora.
As with engine overlapping, this is very usual for European markets. You can get a Mercedes C280 as well as an S280 while Audi has 1.8 on the A3 up to the A6. Do you think the A3 1.8 will cannabalizes the customers from the more expensive A6 1.8? The same story applies to Seat with VR5 to the Golf GTI with VR5 engine, they are in 2 different market segment. Different target market, in marketing sense.
Happy Millenium!
